Building Up to Blogging

Samantha Dane, a 5th grade teacher at Butcher-Greene Elementary, wants her students to blog throughout their school year.  But she knew she couldn't just jump in with her young students, she had to start small.  She decided that her students needed to practice blogging on paper first.  Students were asked to create a paper blog about themselves, asked to edit their work, and had an important conversation about how to comment appropriately to each other's work.  Then they practiced commenting with sticky notes. Take a look at the slideshow below to see their paper blogs.
Once they practiced, students signed up to a safe, education blogging site, Kidblog. Check out their blogs and feel free to make comments!

Mrs. Dane's 5th Grade Blogs

Mrs. Dane plans to have her students blog consistently throughout the year and hopes to have her students attract an audience outside of their classroom through their writing.

Why blogging in Education? Take a look at this video and see how motivated these students are when talking about blogging. Great places to start with blogging are Kidblogs (K-8) and Blogger (6 - 12).
