1st Graders Create Weather Movies

Picture
Stacie Moore, 1st grade teacher, challenged her students to create a movie trailer about weather. They were required to plan our their movie with a storyboard, then to create it using iMovie on the iPads.  Students learned how to search for and find pictures that were relevant to what they were trying to say.  Using an iMovie trailer, students were asked to summarize what they had learned.  Take a look at their iMovies below:

You can find resources on iMovie here, which includes tutorials, ideas on where you can use it in your curriculum, how to roll it out to your students, storyboard templates, and examples from the district.  What did Mrs. Moore's 1st graders think about the project? Watch the video to the right to find out!

4th Graders Collaborate using Google Drive

Picture
Yvette Harris, 4th grade teacher, wanted a way for her students to collaborate on their science fair project at home and at school. She knew Google Drive was the answer! She decided to do an introductory activity to introduce students to the power of collaborating on a google doc.  She adapted this Google Spreadsheet template to ask a science question at the top, then shared it with her students.  Students went to the computer lab, were given a log in card, and were guided on how to log in to Google Drive, since this was their fist time.  Students all went to the shared document and added their input next to their name.  One comment made by a 4th grader was "It was interesting to see how some people had different answers than mine".

After the introductory activity, Mrs. Harris had her students learn how to create a Google Doc, write down ideas for their science fair projects, then share their work with her.  Eventually, students will partner up and collaborate together on one Google Doc for their science fair project.
