There's an (Edmodo) app for that!

Have you checked out the apps in Edmodo yet?  Edmodo now has an app store with great apps for every subject area that seamlessly integrate with your groups! Grandview High School ELA teacher Amy Cameron is using the app No Red Ink with her freshman English class to practice grammar.  By installing the app, she is able to assign interactive grammar practice, quizzes, and exams to her students and can view the results instantly. Ms. Cameron can use the results to assign grammar skills to specific students based on their performance and needs. In addition, the app automatically provides students differentiated instruction by advancing or reintroducing skills based on students' responses. The No Red Ink app also offers tutorials and detailed explanations to help students learn the skills.

No Red Ink is just one of many apps available for you to add to your Edmodo groups. Click here for instructions on how to access the app store and add Edmodo apps to your groups.  We’ve also compiled a short list of apps that you may find useful for your class here.

For more information or for help installing/using Edmodo apps, please email Mary Cordry, Diane DeLaTorre (Stephanchick), or Pia Rosimo-Lee.

Technology Tools to Increase Parent Communication

High Grove Early Childhood Center has been doing a lot of great things with technology this year. One of their goals is to better communicate and share information with their parents. Using Weebly, they have created a school website to provide parents with easy access to information. HGECC teachers have also created their own website to share information and resources to parents. Links to teacher websites are shared in HGECC's school website using Symbaloo. Click here to check out HGECC's school and teacher Weebly sites.

Weebly, as discussed in a previous blog, is a free, easy to use website creator. It provides an easy way for teachers to have an online presence. Weebly has user friendly, drag and drop tools and does not require any HTML knowledge to create a website. Click here to create an account and start building your own website!

Symbaloo is another technology tool used in HGECC's website. It is a free bookmarking service that allows you to save your online favorites. HGECC used Symbaloo to give parents access to their teacher Weebly sites. Parents can easily access a teacher website by clicking on their picture tile. To learn more about Symbaloo click here and create a free account.

Building Up to Blogging

Samantha Dane, a 5th grade teacher at Butcher-Greene Elementary, wants her students to blog throughout their school year.  But she knew she couldn't just jump in with her young students, she had to start small.  She decided that her students needed to practice blogging on paper first.  Students were asked to create a paper blog about themselves, asked to edit their work, and had an important conversation about how to comment appropriately to each other's work.  Then they practiced commenting with sticky notes. Take a look at the slideshow below to see their paper blogs.
Once they practiced, students signed up to a safe, education blogging site, Kidblog. Check out their blogs and feel free to make comments!

Mrs. Dane's 5th Grade Blogs

Mrs. Dane plans to have her students blog consistently throughout the year and hopes to have her students attract an audience outside of their classroom through their writing.

Why blogging in Education? Take a look at this video and see how motivated these students are when talking about blogging. Great places to start with blogging are Kidblogs (K-8) and Blogger (6 - 12).
